Get a new kitchen by looking to the past
Nothing says new kitchen like going retro! The popularity of giving your home a vintage and retro style has become extremely fashionable of late, as the sleek and clutter free contemporary look makes way for the kitsch and cute 'how things used to be' appeal.
Creating a new kitchen that has a retro style is perhaps one of the easiest rooms to do as there are a number of products readily available on the market.
A brand new kitchen
If you do wish to go for the whole retro style and create a brand new kitchen with brand new kitchen units, there are a number of popular and current styles that have taken design inspiration from the past and fit the bill.
High gloss units, particularly in white, will give your kitchen a 21st century retro feel, or alternatively, coloured kitchen units have made a big comeback over the last few years. A new kitchen in lemon or baby blue will really fit the retro look that you are trying to achieve.
New kitchen, new accessories
You can't have failed to notice the amount of vintage inspired accessories that have come on to the market recently that would be ideal for your new kitchen. From storage jars and colanders to tea towels and toasters, it is now quite easy to add a retro touch to any kitchen.
Colour wise, you can't go wrong with the vintage American diner feel of cherry red, or the classic 1950's baby pinks, blues and yellows.
It's all in the detail
If you want to add a touch of vintage to your new kitchen without going over the top, then changing your cupboard door handles is a great place to start. Go for classic glass or ceramic handles to instantly update your units.
If you think back to your grandparents, or even your great-grandparents' kitchen, open storage was a big thing. If you have space in your new kitchen then add a dresser to display all your crockery; hit antique fairs and charity shops to pick up some fabulous vintage chintz to display if your crockery is a bit new looking! If you don't have space for a dresser, then some open shelving will work just as well.
Retro appliances for your new kitchen
Kitchen appliances have moved on a great deal since the era you are trying to emulate in your new kitchen. However, there are a number of companies that have created vintage inspired appliances, which still come with the triple A rating we all desire.
Think 1950s inspired fridge freezers or range cookers, anything with a bit of curve will fit into your look.
