Giving your Bathroom the Luxurious Touch: the Devil's in the Detail
As with most things in life, when it comes to making your new bathroom the best it could be, it's the little things that matter. Attention to detail is paramount, and that means making sure your fixtures and fittings work in harmony with your bathroom suite, and ensuring that the space you have stands out from the crowd. If you know how, there are some easy ways to give your new bathroom the upmarket, luxurious look that every bathroom deserves; here is just a little bit of that know how to get you started:
Pick your bathroom suite carefully
A bath is just a bath, right? Wrong! There are so many bathroom suites available nowadays, why go for the bog standard when you could go for something just that little bit different – and therefore slightly more exotic looking? You'll be able to choose from rectangular bathtubs, p-shaped tubs (both round and square) and the beautiful lines of elliptical baths, for example, plus many more besides. Something a little out of the ordinary is what sets designer bathrooms apart from run of the mill bathrooms. Don't forget to choose a basin and WC which will compliment the bath, too, to ensure that the look flows throughout.
Hide the plumbing
If you think about the bathrooms in luxurious hotels and spas, one thing you can be certain of is that there won't be any unsightly pipes and plumbing on show. No one needs to see the toilet waste pipe, or the pipes supplying the sink, so if you want to make your bathroom feel more up market, hide the plumbing. This can be done via specialist bathroom cabinets – such as vanity units around a basin and WC – and by making sure that your bathroom suite is flush to the wall.
Tiles set the tone for the whole room
Bathroom tiles are big business: they help to create the look for the entire space, so make sure that you choose wisely. White and sandstone are the most popular colours for bathroom tiles at the moment, but even within these choices you need to make sure you pick a tone to suit your overall look: white is crisp and clean but can look clinical and cold in a north-facing bathroom with little light, unless a large scale matt tile is used; sandstone is a warmer colour and when coupled with ivory grout can hide a multitude of cleaning sins.
Remember that you don't have to stick to neutrals, either; some of the most stylish bathroom tiles are the more daring: monochrome and red tiles may sound scary, but can look fabulous in the right setting. What's more, using bathroom tiles to cover all wall and floor space is the most luxurious way of tiling – perhaps use a mixture of bathroom tiles, to include large-scale and mosaic border tiles, to create the look you're after.
Don't forget the finishing touches
It's the little things that often set bathrooms apart – beautifully unusual taps and shower heads, a glossy bathroom cabinet, or a spacious double shower unit; whatever you decide to splurge on, make sure that attention to detail isn't spared.
